Physical Description:
The general appearance of the Boston Terrier should be that of a lively, highly intelligent, smooth-coated, compactly built, short-tailed, well-balanced dog of small-medium size, of black and white or brindle colour and evenly marked with white. Ideal markings: white muzzle, even white blaze over head, collar, breast, part or whole of forelegs, and hind legs below hocks.
Size: Divided by classes as follows: lightweight, under 15lb (7kg); middleweight, 15lb. and under 20lb. (7-9 kg); heavyweight, 25lb. and over.
There are, of course, many Bostons with “irregular” markings and those whose appearance varies from the breed standard. Most rescues do not come with registration papers! While this may limit their careers in the show ring, this does not in any way make them less desirable as wonderful loving companions, and they can excel in many dogs sports such as agility, flyball, obedience and more.

Breed Information
The Boston Terrier was America’s first native purebred. Developed in Boston, Massachusetts during the 19th century by crossing the English Bulldog and the now extinct white English Terrier, he was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1893, and was first registered in Canada in 1898-1899. The Boston Terrier was the most popular breed in the States between the years 1929-1935 and is now experiencing resurgence in popularity.
Delightful and happy, this breed offers an alert and active personality with confidence and intelligence and an extraordinary sense of humor. His unique tuxedo coat and jaunty attitude only enhance the overall demeanor. Well suited for a variety of homes due to its size, easy nature and coat, the Boston Terrier has unfortunately become the darling of the puppy mill and irresponsible breeding world... special care MUST be taken to verify that your source of a puppy is a responsible one and that you are indeed a suitable home for one.
A dog is a lifetime commitment and requires attention, love, patience, and training. It is your responsibility to ensure that you put enough effort and time into your dog to have the companion you want. There is no such thing as a pre-trained, non-barking, 100% housetrained, gentle and perfect dog that loves all people, children, and other pets. Each dog is an individual and comes with its own unique traits and behaviours. If you are willing to spend some time and effort into training and socializing your Boston Terrier, then you will have the pet you want.
The temperament of a typical Boston Terrier is sweet and loveable. He is alert and willing to please if given love and understanding by his owner. Genuinely "a people's dog" he prefers his owner's companionship to that of other members of the animal kingdom.
Children MUST be taught how to handle any puppy/dog. Any breed of dog will sometimes defend itself if children do not treat it properly.
A weekly brushing is adequate to keep a Boston's coat in healthy order. Nails should be clipped and ears should be kept clean.
Boston Terriers snore quite loudly due to their short muzzles. They also suffer from gas but a high quality dog food, daily exercise, and consistent feeding can help to control this problem. Some Boston Terriers can be very "barky" while others are not.
Boston Terriers should be INDOOR DOGS ONLY, since they aren't able to stand extreme cold or heat. They will overheat very quickly and die if left in hot cars or similar environments.
